PROJECT HEALTH CHECKS AND MENTORING!
In recent months Rational has seen a surge in demand for these services. Our consultants have been on client sites, working with project managers to enhance the effectiveness of client's projects. Here's a brief outline on how these services work.
Health Checks
The purpose of a Project Heath Check is to evaluate a project to determine it’s effective application of the PRINCE2™ methodology (or a tailored methodology), to determine the key stakeholder views of the health of the project and to provide advice for the Project Board, Project Assurance and the Project Manager on suggested corrective actions. The process is as follows:
Part 1. An evaluation of the project to determine its compliance with the agreed project management methodology. This is conducted through an interview with the Project Manager to determine the existence and completeness of the project documents. Access is then usually required to the project documents to conduct the compliance audit.
Part 2. A questionnaire is provided to each of the Project Board members and Project Assurance nominees to determine the quality of content of the project documents and to elicit comments on the health of the project from their perspective.
Part 3. The consultant conducting the Health Check provides comments on the findings in Part 1. and Part 2. and develops, if required, written recommendations for suggested corrective actions. A feedback session with the Project Manager is a desirable, but optional component.
Mentoring
Project managers and team members live in a challenging environment. They must navigate the complexities of diverse stakeholders, they must meet the expectations of their project boards and they must control the project to ensure the outcomes are delivered on-time, within-budget and to the quality required. Project managers need to be multi-skilled sufficiently to be effective planners, communicators, risk analysers, controllers, negotiators and problem solvers.
Many organisations recognise that there are substantial benefits to be gained from providing an experienced resource that can guide project managers through these complexities. Even very experienced project managers may need some assistance in the application of a new project management method (such as PRINCE2™) to their first projects.
Rational Management provides experienced and trained project management coaches who are available either on a regular schedule, for a fixed period, or just on call as required. Our objective is demonstrate the fast-track approaches without compromising integrity of the method and to transfer our knowledge and skills to the recipient.
